I followed maps
On my way
To what I hoped would prove to me
That there are still things worth living for.
And when I arrived I found
Two nights filled
With thick thighs
And thicker smoke.
We sat on those stairs
With our cigarettes
While I battled the anxious nerves
In my stomach.
And when the coolness of the night
Crashed
Into the lust induced heat of our room
It created a storm
That messed up our sheets
And made me ache.
Later, my skirt slouched
On the hips that you bruised
When we discovered
Those elusive fireflies
That you swore existed.
And we made empty promises
Full of intentions
Because we had every intention
Of seeing one another
After it was over.
But later we found
That what bound my arms
Behind my back
Was not strong enough to keep me
From leaving the place
Where you cried beside me when
We both realized
It was time for me to go.
